We have a city suffering from violence, addiction, and a declining population, without enough experienced leaders in City Hall to make a difference. Thiru has a blueprint for how to get our city back on track and working for every Baltimorean, regardless of zip code.
Thiru knows we cannot unleash Baltimore’s promise until we stop the daily killings. No one is more prepared to reverse the worst murder surge in Baltimore history. We do not need cash bail, mass incarceration or mandatory minimums to make us safe. Thiru will build a smarter police force and launch simultaneous gang investigations in the city’s deadliest neighborhoods.

In order to restore integrity and trust in government, transparency must be City Hall’s north star. Top officials will have to disclose all sources of income. And in the first 100 days, Thiru will require independent, top-to-bottom audits of every city agency to uncover fraud, corruption, and waste.

Baltimore must not only attract the best talent in the country, but also must produce the best and brightest in the world. This starts in our schools. We will guarantee universal pre-K for 3- and 4-year-olds, support year-round charter school options, and make sure that Maryland universities, trade schools, and community colleges are free for every graduate of a city public school.
The Mayor’s job is to create more jobs. Thiru will support small businesses, promote responsible development, and build an inclusive economy. From biotech and cybersecurity to cancer research and the culinary arts, Baltimore is poised to drive regional economic growth. But this requires a Mayor with the courage and ideas to jumpstart an economy that has stalled.

For too long, Baltimore City residents have paid twice as much in property taxes as everyone else in Maryland. With soaring crime and broken schools, this tax rate has become harder and harder to explain. High property taxes discourage families and businesses from investing in Baltimore and are regularly cited by residents and companies who leave the city as one of the main reasons why. As mayor, Thiru will reduce property taxes by half over the next decade.

Baltimore’s population is at a 100-year low. We need to make Baltimore a place to buy a home, raise a family, start a business, and retire and grow old. That won’t happen with high taxes, broken schools, and soaring crime. But we also need functional public transit, more rec centers for kids, investment in infrastructure, and a commitment to public health. All of this we can do—if we work together. Thiru is the only candidate ready on day one to lead the way.

Baltimore’s city government failed its citizens, and our city deserves an explanation for why the city was unprepared for the Ransomware attack. Thiru recently released a web tool that allows citizens to search their past water bill information. Find yours here.
Thiru wants Baltimore to become the most inviting and hospitable city in the country for the LGBTQ community. He is dedicated to safeguarding their rights and fostering diversity and inclusivity. While the city has made progress, LGBTQ-identifying individuals continue to face systemic discrimination. On the eve of the 2019 Baltimore Pride celebration, Thiru announced policies that account for the fact that this discrimination manifests itself differently depending upon race, sexual orientation, and gender identity and aim to breakdown barriers to full equality.
The marijuana marketplace in Baltimore is currently a chaotic free-for-all. The illegal trade contributes to record violence while depriving taxpayers of hundreds of millions of dollars. Thiru wants to use Baltimore’s independent charter authority to become the first city in America to regulate and tax recreational cannabis use without federal or state approval.

From lead paint to gun violence to malnutrition, the children of this city have endured too many public health crises of our own making -- Thiru will not let them fall victim to another. He unveiled a series of proposed restrictions on e-cigarettes, which would be among the strongest in the nation, designed to halt a growing epidemic that threatens young people both here in Baltimore and across the country. Thiru will push for efforts from an effective tax on e-cigarettes to fund children’s health screenings at elementary schools and heighten prevention efforts, to a push for public leaders to put citizens before campaign finances, personal gain, and industry profits.
